There is no set definition available for pop music. A variation of word popular music, pop music has defined the music industry greatly. Pop music has always identified to be aimed at the youth market and have represented itself as a soft alternative to famous rock music of the 1950’s, the golden days of Elvis Presley.

Most of musicologists associate certain attributes with pop music that separates it as a distinct genre. These include orientation towards a single market and songs that are individual. Also, rather than performing live there is an emphases on recorded performance. Technology greatly impacts composition of song rather the musical abilities of the musician. There is a prevailing artificiality or craftsmanship over artistic values. We find unimportant or simple themes in the songs. The songs are thus more appealing to general population. We also find a tendency to follow existing practices and fashionable trends over progressing developments.

Electronic jingles and related sound effects have invaded the life of millions every day via the media of radio and television since the mid-1960. These ephemera, while familiarizing the general public with the nature of synthesized sounds, have generally debased these sources to the level of advertising aid. Such a widely recognized application, however, is only one step removed in the public consciousness from the culture of rock and pop music, which uses electronic music to broaden a mass appeal. Pop music has been greatly influenced from other genres of popular music. This includes sentimental ballad, Jazz, soul music and recently rap. This is further impacted by the cultural and regional musical variations of the country where pop music is sung.

Pop music have also many sub genres which include Avant-pop, Baroque pop, Bastard pop, Bubblegum pop, Dance-pop, Electropop, Indie pop, Noise pop, Operatic pop, Power pop, Sophisti-pop, Space age pop, Sunshine pop, Synthpop and Teen pop . Pop music has also been integrated with other musical forms and known fusion genres are country pop, disco, dream pop, house-pop, jangle pop, pop punk, pop rap, pop rock, psychedelic pop, techno-pop and urban pop.

A very recent pop icon Michael Jackson died leaving millions of pop music fans sad. Michael was idolized as King of Pop as he gave pop music a new vigor through innovative musical fitches and technological beats. He merged disco and pop in something that is still a sensation topping pop charts around the world. And still for the time to come, we find this music beating with common man’s heart.

Country is a music that is frequently misunderstood. It’s got a reputation for being simple and homespun. A style defined for twang untrained voices, the loan some moan of steel guitar and songs that deal with stock subjects like faithful dogs, loving mothers, shattered love affairs, empty bottles and the little loan cabin in the lane. Some dislike country music because it sounds crusty and creaky while others love it as a homogenized country pop originating from the Radio stations at their home towns. This is no surprise as in the 1990’s singers like Shania Twain and Garth Brooks sold more records than any one of their processors. This voice is still heard through Carrie Underwood whose music is dominating the lives of millions.

Commercially, country music can trace its inception to early 20’s when it was music of white. Being traditional folk music, country music was chiefly rural and southern. Hillbilly string bands who entertained at community gatherings, fiddlers who showed their skills at over the years all represented country music in its raw form.

This all changed with Jimmie Rodgers who is known as father of country music. Starting from his there is a long list of country artists that put their souls in this music and made it popular among the general public. Who can forget the memorable songs sung by Olivia Newton Johns, Garth Brooks and Kenny Rogers!

The 1990’s saw an alternative form of country music which cam to be known as alternative country. This music was with lyrics that were often bleak, gothic or socially aware. Known artists of the time were Steve Earle, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Ryan Adams, My Morning Jacket and Drive-By Truckers. It was in 2000 we saw a new vigor in country music that was instilled by Richard Marx, Bon Jovi and currently Tyler Swift and Carrie Underwood.

Country music has also got a lot of fan club in Australia and Canada. Focusing its feel on lyrics, Australian country music developed it own unique style, mirrored by such artists as Lee Kernaghan, Slim Dusty and Adam Brand. Some notable Canadian country artists include: Shania Twain, Blue Rodeo, Marg Osburne, Hank Snow, Johnny Mooring, Don Messer, Doc Walker, Emerson Drive, Paul Brandt, The Wilkinsons, Wilf Carter, Michelle Wright, Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Terri Clark, Crystal Shawanda, Shane Yellowbird, The Road Hammers, and Anne Murray.

Western music can be associated broadly with the music of the west and in reference to USA it can be associated with the country music or in other terms the country music itself. However, considering the former the later is also covered with in.

Western music or music of the west can be classified into classical music, pop and popular music. Classical music can further be distinguished between medieval music, renaissance music, baroque music, classical music era, romantic music, 20th century classical music and contemporary or new music. On the other hand pop and popular music can be generally segmented in to acid (disambiguation), bluegrass, blues, country music, disco, folk, hymns, jazz, metal, neofolk, punk rock, rap, rock and roll, ska, soul, spirituals, swing, synthpop, techno and trance. These categories themselves have various sub genres and fusions.

When it comes to classical music, we are talking about the golden age of music. Music! That was based on codes and staff notation. Classical music gets its roots in the 9th century AD however, it was in the 1550’s that this music started getting its composite shape and later on we find music of legends like Bach, Beethoven and altogether new concepts of andante and allegro Dante. It was classical symphonies and sonatas that made the court houses to admire music in its unique form. Performance of classical music requires dexterity and proficiency in sight reading and ensemble playing, thorough understanding of tonal and harmonic principles, understanding of performance practice, and a familiarity with the style/musical idiom inherent to a given period, composer or musical work are among the most essential of skills for the classically trained musician.

Works of classical selection often exhibit artistic complexity through the use of thematic development, phrasing, harmonization, change of key, texture, and, of course, musical form itself. Larger-scale compositional forms (such as that of the symphony, concerto, opera or oratorio, for example) usually represent a hierarchy of smaller units consisting of phrases, periods, sections, and movements. Musical analysis of a composition aims at achieving greater understanding of it, leading to more meaningful hearing and a greater appreciation of the composer’s style. Recently classical music has started to gain reputation among people who have started to admire it in its originality and listen to it more and more.

There is no specific description available for pop music. A variation of word popular music, pop music has changed the music industry greatly both in terms of music taste as well as commercially. Pop music has always identified to be aimed at the youth and have represented itself as a soft alternative to famous rock music of the 1950’s, the golden days of Elvis Presley. However, it broadly encompasses rock music itself.

It is these traits that have contributed to shape other genres of pop music including country music.

Music is the child of social consequences, which are constantly molded by the events in history. Music has always reflected the outside world and sublimated it. The novelty of making music with electronic instruments has long been outdated. The use of electronics to compose, organize, record, mix, color, stretch, randomize, project, perform and distribute music is now interwoven into the fabric of modern music. Just like we have become used to digital effects in the movies, similarly we have become accustomed to electronic synthesis in the new music.

Music as we know it today could not exist without technology. Because it is the technology, that provides today’s music, its many fusions and genres. The explosive developments in the new music ideals is the direct consequence of new musical ideals and instruments developed in the last century not forgetting the recording technologies. Musicians now compose music without boundaries, without bounds, as they can integrate what was impossible before. This has greatly shaped the way they compose music and the way they think about it.

New music is electronically produced and is a part of mainstream culture. Musical concepts that were once considered radical- the use of environmental sounds, ambient music, turntable music, digital sampling, the electronic modification of acoustic sounds, computer music, music made from -fragments of speech – have now been submerged in to modern music. Now we find new music in the genres new age, rap, hip-hop, electronica, techno, jazz and all rely heavily on the classical techniques of electronic music.

New age is the music of differential styles accompanying all together. It is intended to create inspiration, relaxation, and positive feelings. New Age music includes both electronic forms, frequently relying on sustained pads or long sequencer-based runs, and acoustic forms, featuring instruments such as flutes, piano, acoustic guitar and a wide variety of non-western acoustic instruments. In many cases, high-quality digitally sampled instruments are used instead of natural acoustic instruments. Vocal arrangements were initially rare in New Age music but as it has evolved vocals have become more common, especially vocals featuring Sanskrit, Tibetan- or Native American-influenced chants, or lyrics based on mythology such as Celtic legends or the realm of Faerie.

New music is different from other music in the sense that the sound resources available to electronic music are unlimited and can be constructed from scratch. One of the key differences between new music and music composed from the traditional instruments are its sonic vistas are limitless and undefined. The composer not only creates the music, but also composes the very sounds themselves. The new music thus expands our perception of tonality. We find sounds created even from ordinary acoustics but with entirely swindling recoups.

Some outstanding music can be heard in the music of Enya, Kitaro and Bradely Joseph. Their music represents a sound of its own. Something that new music stores for its listeners, something that has constantly shaped our taste for music and would continue to do so.

Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul. Indian music is known for its melody and richness of emotion. The roots of Indian music can be traced to Vedas (the religious books of knowledge). To many believers, music was created by God Himself. For them it was something divine, something heavenly. That is sole reason we find earlier Indian music as ritualistic with hymns sung to God (Bahagwan). Brahma the thought writer of Sema Veda patterned Indian music on three notes and it was sung in plain rhyme. This music then underwent modifications in the Mughal era by styles of Dhrupad, Dhamar, Khayal.

The music of India is a insidious influence in Indian life. It pervades the big and small events of Indian life, from child birth to death, religious rites and seasonal festivals. Originally, not all developments of music were reduced to writing. To keep their traditional integrity, they were imparted orally from teacher to pupil — the Guru-Shishya tradition. In the past, there used to be a system of Gurukul Ashram or purpose built institutes where teachers imparted knowledge to deserving students.

Indian music’s base is Raga which the soul of classical music. A raga is based on the principle of a combination of notes selected out the 22 note intervals of the octave. A performer having sufficient training and knowledge alone can create the desired emotions, through the combination of shrutis and notes. There are a limited number of ragas in Hindustani music; as the use of a “KING” note and a “QUEEN” note restricts to a great extent, the creation of new ragas. The raga forms the backbone of Indian music, and the laws lay down for the ragas have to be carefully observed to preserve and safeguard their integrity. Since ragas are associated with times and nature, we find great resemblance of this fact in the names of these ragas. The ten famous ragas are Bilaval — with all shuddh or natural notes, Khamaj — with the ni note as komal, Kafi — with the ga and ni notes as komal, Asavari — with the ga, dha and ni notes as komal, Bhairavi — with the re, ga, dha and ni notes as komal, Bhairav — with the re and dha notes as komal, Poorvi — with the re and dha notes as komal and the ma note as teevra., Todi — with the re, ga and dha notes as komal and the ma note as teevra., Marwa — with the re note as komal and the ma note as teevra and Yaman — with the ma note as teevra only.

Recent times have seen quite a modification in Indian Music and cultural influences are very much evident in these changes. Indian Bhangra is one such example. Then the Indian folk music itself has its on appeal. Indian ghazal and Bhajans have again their own soothing and mystical affects. And nonetheless the new influence of western music combined with India music again starting a new genre in musical world.

Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop” was an American born artist who is one of the greatest entertainers of the contemporary era. With is unique style of music and dance he lived and living in thousands of hearts all over the world.

His feet made feats that owed him Guinness records, 13 Grammy awards for the “Most Successful Entertainer of All Times, and the sales of his music albums over 750 millions records etc. He is the man of style with his black fedora always; his glove, shoes and his sole performance over the stage fascinated the people and made him well-liked all over the world.

In the year 1970, Michael Jackson focused on his solo career and won his first Grammy award at the age of 11 for the best R&B male vocal performance. Later in the year 1982, he released his album “Thriller” which made him to be a successful performer of all the time. Thriller remains the best endorsed album and it reached high selling record among all the music albums in the world. In the year 1983, Jackson pioneered his unique styles and one among them is the Moon-walk in the song “Billie Jean”. The chic Moon-walk became more popular and was made as an obligatory movement by the performers who try to impersonate Jackson.

The year 1984 showered the rewards and accolades to Michael Jackson. He received seven awards for the albums and shared in the record of the year award for “Beat It”. He broke Roger Miller’s record over night on winning eight Grammy awards who won six for his album “King of the Road” in the year 1965. In the year 1985, again his album Thriller won him another Grammy award in the category of best video film.

“We are the world” is the next release of Jackson in his hand with Lionel Richie in the year 1986. This album won him Grammy award for the song of the year category. This album is next to “Thriller” for best selling out all over the world. Two years later in 1989, Jackson and his team worked on a new release “Leave Me Alone” which follows up with another new album “Bad”.

These albums won him the short form video award. In the year 1995, Michael Jackson released the double album – HIStory. The first release from the album is “Scream”. “Scream” is the duet performance of Michael Jackson with his younger sister Janet Jackson. The second release of HIStory is “You Are Not Alone” which packed up a Guinness world record. “Earth Song” is the third release from HIStory and the song made him winning sole of UK.

Jackson in the year 1996 started his HIStory world tour and he rocked for about 14 months all over the world. He performed 82 concerts, in 58 cities in front of millions of people. He became the rock star of the year and unbeaten protagonist among the audience. Unfortunately Jackson got in to many controversies in later years which caused a little drop to his career. But “Michael did with music what they did in sport, television shows and politics. No controversy will erase his impact,” said civil rights leader Rev.

Al Sharpton. Now the “King of Pop” is no more but he still lives in form of his dance, his moon-walks, his style of singing in every kid trying to mimic his signature dance.
