An Overview of New Music

Music is the child of social consequences, which are constantly molded by the events in history. Music has always reflected the outside world and sublimated it. The novelty of making music with electronic instruments has long been outdated. The use of electronics to compose, organize, record, mix, color, stretch, randomize, project, perform and distribute music is now interwoven into the fabric of modern music. Just like we have become used to digital effects in the movies, similarly we have become accustomed to electronic synthesis in the new music.

Music as we know it today could not exist without technology. Because it is the technology, that provides today’s music, its many fusions and genres. The explosive developments in the new music ideals is the direct consequence of new musical ideals and instruments developed in the last century not forgetting the recording technologies. Musicians now compose music without boundaries, without bounds, as they can integrate what was impossible before. This has greatly shaped the way they compose music and the way they think about it.

New music is electronically produced and is a part of mainstream culture. Musical concepts that were once considered radical- the use of environmental sounds, ambient music, turntable music, digital sampling, the electronic modification of acoustic sounds, computer music, music made from -fragments of speech – have now been submerged in to modern music. Now we find new music in the genres new age, rap, hip-hop, electronica, techno, jazz and all rely heavily on the classical techniques of electronic music.

New age is the music of differential styles accompanying all together. It is intended to create inspiration, relaxation, and positive feelings. New Age music includes both electronic forms, frequently relying on sustained pads or long sequencer-based runs, and acoustic forms, featuring instruments such as flutes, piano, acoustic guitar and a wide variety of non-western acoustic instruments. In many cases, high-quality digitally sampled instruments are used instead of natural acoustic instruments. Vocal arrangements were initially rare in New Age music but as it has evolved vocals have become more common, especially vocals featuring Sanskrit, Tibetan- or Native American-influenced chants, or lyrics based on mythology such as Celtic legends or the realm of Faerie.

New music is different from other music in the sense that the sound resources available to electronic music are unlimited and can be constructed from scratch. One of the key differences between new music and music composed from the traditional instruments are its sonic vistas are limitless and undefined. The composer not only creates the music, but also composes the very sounds themselves. The new music thus expands our perception of tonality. We find sounds created even from ordinary acoustics but with entirely swindling recoups.

Some outstanding music can be heard in the music of Enya, Kitaro and Bradely Joseph. Their music represents a sound of its own. Something that new music stores for its listeners, something that has constantly shaped our taste for music and would continue to do so.
