Introduction to Western Music

Introduction to western music can be related mostly with the music of the west. The creation of “Western music” lies near the beginning of Middle Ages and the pure song of the Church of Rome. At the end of the Middle Ages, the growth and extension of music was essentially linked to the spiritual ceremonies. Singing was used mostly for the rites of Holy relationship and other ritual gatherings of the Church. In this situation music was as plain and clean as possible with the want of any definite rhythm. The   clear rhythm was appeared in the 13th century. This self-contained music became enrich through the labors of St. Ambrose, the fourth-century bishop of Milan. He revealed eastern modes especially rhyme of the Byzantine Church with a scale arrangement rented from Greek modes.  The intervals between notes were slighter. The singing became more flowing and graceful.

Western music can be categorized into classical music, pop and popular music. Classical music can additional be distinguished between medieval music(476-1400), renaissance music(1400-1600), baroque music(1600-1750), classical music period(1730-1820), romantic music(1815-1910), 20th century classical music(1900-2000) golden period from John Sebastian Bach to Beethoven, and modern music(1975-current). On the other side  pop and popular music can be commonly segmented in to acid (disambiguation), bluegrass, blues, country music, disco, folk, hymns, jazz, metal, punk rock, rap, rock and roll, spirituals, swing, techno, trance and some others. These types themselves have a range of subordinate genres and fusions.

If we are talking about classical music it means the golden age of music. Staff notation and codes is base of classical music. Classical music finds its line in the 9th century AD. However, it was in the 1550’s that this music begin to get its multiple form and shortly we find music of legends like Bach, Beethoven and altogether new ideas of andante and allegro Dante. The classical symphonies and sonatas made the court houses to think highly of music in its matchless form. Performance of classical music demands agility and skill in sight reading and group playing, methodical understanding of tonal and harmonic ideology, understanding of presentation practice, and an expertise with the musical expression inherent to a given era, musician or musical work are among the most essential of skills for the classically qualified musician.

Classical music frequently show signs of artistic complexity during the use of thematic maturity, phrasing, coordination, change of key, quality and musical form itself. Superior-scale compositional forms including symphony, concerto, opera or oratorio usually stand for a hierarchy of slighter units consisting of phrases, intervals, sections, and arrangements. The aim of Musical study of a composition is to achieve great understanding of it, leading to further significant hearing and a better admiration of the composer’s style. In recent times, classical music is in progress to grow repute among people who have begun to think highly of it in its uniqueness

. Popular music or pop music has altered the music industry to a great extent. Pop music has represented itself as a soft substitute to well-known rock music of the 1950’s, the golden days of Elvis Presley. Technology significantly impacts composition of song in pop-music rather the musical skills of the musician.  We can locate slight or simple themes in the songs. These songs are thus more charming to common population. We also find a tendency to follow fashionable trends over succeeding developments.
